In mid-to-late 2026, the two leading AI coding agents — Anthropic’s Claude (especially Claude Code / Cowork) and OpenAI’s Codex — both received major upgrades. Claude pushed agentic coding, browser control, memory, and new flagship models (Opus 5 and Sonnet 5). Codex expanded far beyond pure coding with computer use, image generation, plugins, deeper developer workflows, and stronger long-running agent capabilities.

Claude’s Latest Features (Anthropic)
Anthropic’s summer 2026 releases focused on making Claude more agentic, reliable for long tasks, and useful outside pure chat.
Key model updates

Codex’s Latest Features (OpenAI)
OpenAI’s “Codex for (almost) everything” update (and subsequent releases through August 2026) turned Codex into a broader computer-using agent while strengthening its core coding strengths.
Key model & capability updates
- Stronger Codex-family models (including GPT-5.x-Codex variants and GPT-5.6 Sol / related frontier models) optimized for long-running agentic coding, multi-context-window work via compaction, and high scores on SWE-bench and Terminal-Bench style evaluations. Which Should You Use?
Many developers run both: Claude for high-stakes reasoning, multi-file consistency, and thoughtful agentic work; Codex for speed, parallel tasks, computer-wide actions, and visual iteration. Pricing on Pro/Plus tiers is similar (around /month entry), with higher Max/Pro tiers for heavier usage.
